The titleCommissioned on the occasion of the eighth edition of the Modena International Military Tattoo in 2004, this piece is a typical example of its genre: introduction (fanfare), anthem, adagio, repeat. After the opening blare of the trumpets - a tribute to one of the characteristic features of military music and to the festival that commissioned the work - the piece develops with a solemn martial anthem, a marked contrast to the adagio, which is more intense and meditative. The piece ends with a variation of the anthem theme. Although the work can be divided into these different sections, there is an overall continuity which is immediately clear: the anthem section is the heart of this work and generates all the elements that characterise it, so that it develops continuously, from the opening blare through to the coda. The theme, based on the opening idea, grows and is gradually enriched by the addition and incorporation of new elements. The music that results from this process is a symbol of strength;a strength that unites, develops and is enhanced by the addition of different ideas. The strength of peace. Peace in the strength of the ideas. The "Fanfare and Hymn for Peace" is dedicated to this concept. It was first performed on 7 July 2004 by the "Banda dell'Esercito Italiano" conducted by maestro Fulvio Creux, in the courtyard of honour of the Ducal Palace in Modena, the headquarters of the Military Academy. With this work, Marco Somadossi won first prize overall at the seventh edition of the "Pietro Pernice" international band composition competition in Canicattini Bagni (Siracusa).
